The short answer
Before pairing a used truck with a travel trailer, collect the trailer’s loaded-weight requirements and the exact truck’s ratings and equipment. A model’s headline towing maximum is not enough to approve a particular truck-and-trailer combination.[1][2]
Two sets of information to bring together
| What matters | Collect from the trailer seller | Verify for the exact truck |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Model, model year and the trailer you intend to buy. | VIN, model year, engine and installed equipment. |
| Weight information[2] | Loaded-weight requirements and the maker’s ratings. | Applicable vehicle, payload and combination ratings. |
| Connection equipment | Hitch and braking requirements for that trailer. | Installed hitch, controller and other required equipment. |
| Decision | Bring the written specifications to your truck discussion. | Resolve the complete combination before making a compatibility claim. |
This is a shopping worksheet, not a towing-capacity calculator or compatibility approval. Consult the applicable vehicle and trailer manuals and qualified guidance for the complete combination.
Make the show a useful research trip
The Houston RV Show organizer announces February 10–13, 2027. If you are considering a travel trailer, collect the exact specifications for the models you like while you are there.
A photo of the layout is useful, but a written specification sheet is what lets you continue the tow-vehicle conversation afterward. Check dates and visitor information with the organizer before traveling. Classic’s inclusion of the event does not imply sponsorship or participation.[1]
Ask for the truck’s own information
GMC explains that some vehicles carry a driver-side doorjamb trailering label with vehicle-specific weight information. Ask which labels and documents apply to the truck you are considering.
An engine badge, an attractive hitch or a general model advertisement is not enough to establish the complete towing setup. If a required rating or installed component is unknown, keep it as an open question.[2]
Describe the trip you actually plan to take
Write down the people, luggage and equipment that normally travel in the truck. Bring that list to the discussion along with the trailer information.
Avoid a decision based only on an empty-trailer number. Ask how your planned loading and the complete combination relate to the applicable ratings. This guide deliberately does not assign a trailer to a listed truck.
Use Classic’s inventory as a starting point
The active Sierra 1500 and Silverado 1500 listings below let you begin comparing actual vehicles and asking for their specific information.
Their presence on this page does not certify towing compatibility. Also, vehicles available today may be sold before February. Keep your requirements and notes so you can evaluate whichever suitable vehicles are available when you are ready.[3]
